#Racism must fall – EFF protest in Wellington
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Drakenstein sub-region today confronted a dental surgery for its openly racist practices head-on.
The movement responded on complaints received from the residents that for the past 22 years local residents are still being treated socially unequal while frequenting this white-owned establishment.
The EFF over the weekend on social media placed a call on all the so-called Coloured and African Black residents not to support this establishment which is situated In Prins Street, near Spar in Kerk Street, Wellington, and all other establishments that don’t adhere to its constitutional obligations treating all people as equals. Bernard Joseph, chairperson of the EFF in the Western Cape, led the confrontation with several fighters of the local sub-region.
He says it is totally unacceptable that this blatant disregard for hard earned social equality has been tolerated for this long. A clear message needs to be conveyed to all of these businesses that such disregard and human rights abuses will not be tolerated any longer. Such behaviour belittle and discriminate against our previously disadvantaged, neglected and marginalised poor.
Various local white residents, in response to the movement’s call for a stay-away on social media, contacted the Drakenstein EFF-leaders to confirm the racist treatment of so-called Coloured people at this establishments. They recollected and also confirmed firsthand their experience of mostly so-called Coloured patients expected to sit on uncomfortable hard plastic chairs on one end, while white patrons who visits the same establishment are seated on soft comfortable couches. Joseph says as if this is not embarrassing enough, the dental surgery is also performed in two separate rooms, one fit for the privileged white bourgeoisie, while the rest is helped in a secondary room, referred to as the clinic, and which can be compared to the inside of a hokkie. “This is done under the guise of distinction between “medical aid customers” and those that “pay cash”.
But white residents who don’t have medical aid is also not allowed to be helped at the ‘clinic’s’ side of the practice. “If these businesses can’t treat our people with the necessary dignity and respect, our people’s money should distinct their tills in the same manner. We strive towards inclusively and will show no respect to those who refuse to transform, and who continues to degrade and economically classify our people”, Joseph reiterated.
