Eff Western Cape Statement On The Employment Of A Sexual Predator By Bardale Primary School
It has come to the attention of the EFF Western Cape that about seven years ago, a teacher sexually harassed a 13 year old girl in Bardale Primary School, City of Cape Town and he was not only given a slap on the wrist in the form of a R6 000 fine, but is still employed by the Western Cape Education Department.
The EFF Western Cape is not convinced by how the Western Cape Education Department has handled various pertinent issues faced by the province and this is just one of them.
In a country where gender based violence and rape are at an all time high; where it has been confirmed that over 41% of rapes are against children; where there have been various reports of child molestation (some reports dating back decades ago) and where the conviction rate for rape cases is less than ten percent; how does the Western Cape Education Department account for harbouring a sexual predator for almost a decade?
The EFF Western Cape is unequivocal about its stance against gender based violence, sexual violation and sexual harassment, especially of minors and thus demands that anyone found guilty of any form of sexual harassment must receive a heavy sentence, be entered in a pedophile or sexual predators list and must never be exposed to people they can potentially harm, starting with the teacher involved.
The EFF Western Cape will definitely be engaging with the school and various stakeholders to ensure the teacher is fired immediately and is nowhere near our children. Means will be made to make contact with the family of the minor, to ensure she receives psychological support, which should be made compulsory by law for all victims of sexual assault, and pave a way forward that best suits her wellbeing.
Women and children have had to bear the brunt of being in the receiving end of all violence for too long, and this must come to a stop.
